The Watcher House- A Nightmare in New Jersey

Some homes carry whispers of old hauntings, tragic deaths, or unexplained phenomena. But in Westfield, New Jersey, there’s a house that holds a different kind of terror—one not born of ghosts, but of human obsession. Let’s dive into this chilling true story!

A beautiful house that is big and green

In 2014, Derek and Maria Broaddus thought they had found their forever home: a stunning six-bedroom colonial at 657 Boulevard. With its spacious rooms and tree-lined street, it seemed perfect for raising their three young children. They had barely begun moving in when the first letter appeared in their mailbox.

The envelope was addressed simply to “The New Owner.” Inside, typed words introduced the writer as “The Watcher.”

The letter began politely, congratulating the family on buying the home. But quickly, the tone shifted into something dark and unsettling.

“657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now,” it read. “I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls?”

The Watcher’s words grew more chilling with each letter. They claimed to have been “watching” the house for generations, waiting for “young blood” to once again fill its rooms. They mentioned the couple’s children by name and described seeing them play in the yard.

One letter asked: “Have they found what’s in the walls yet? In time, they will.”

The Broaddus family was shaken. Who was sending these letters? And how did they know such private details about their lives?

Over the next weeks, more letters came—each more threatening than the last. The Watcher hinted at violence, spoke of watching the house through windows, and taunted the family for ever thinking they could live there.

Fear consumed them. The Broadduses contacted police, who opened an investigation. But despite handwriting analysis, neighborhood interviews, and even DNA testing on the envelopes, no culprit was ever found. The case went cold.

Theories quickly spread. Was it a neighbor jealous of the purchase? A prankster with a cruel sense of humor? Some suggested it could be a disgruntled local who felt the house “belonged” to them. Others believed it was part of a larger cover-up, tied to something darker lurking in the home’s past.

The Broadduses were so terrified they never moved in. They tried renting the home, but even tenants received disturbing notes. Lawsuits were filed, neighbors grew suspicious of one another, and the town itself became unsettled by the case.

Eventually, the family sold the house at a massive loss, unable to shake the fear that had gripped them. To this day, The Watcher has never been identified. The mystery remains unsolved, a chilling reminder that sometimes the scariest hauntings aren’t supernatural—they’re human.

The home still stands on 657 Boulevard. People drive by out of curiosity, whispering about the letters, the fear, and the unknown figure who may still be watching.

So the question remains: who was The Watcher? A disturbed neighbor? A twisted prankster? Or someone with secrets about that house that will never come to light?

No one knows. But one thing is certain—657 Boulevard has earned its place among America’s most terrifying true stories.
