The Disappearance of the Sodder Children: A Christmas Night Mystery

A Tragedy Broke Out

On Christmas Eve 1945, a fire engulfed the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia, leaving behind a mystery that lingers to this day. George and Jennie Sodder, along with nine of their ten children, were asleep when the blaze started around 1 a.m. The fire spread rapidly, and while George, Jennie, and four of their children escaped, five siblings—Maurice (14), Martha (12), Louis (9), Jennie (8), and Betty (5)—were never seen again. What followed is a haunting tale of conflicting evidence, strange discoveries, and a family’s relentless search for answers.

What Happened?

The official report ruled the fire an accident caused by faulty wiring, and authorities concluded the missing children perished in the flames. But the Sodders found this explanation unconvincing. No bones or remains were found in the ashes, despite the fire burning for only about 45 minutes before the house was reduced to rubble—a duration experts later argued was too short to completely cremate five bodies. The family also recalled odd events leading up to the tragedy: a mysterious phone call received by Jennie just before midnight from an unfamiliar woman, a stranger visiting weeks earlier who remarked that the house would “burn down” and the children would “be destroyed,” and the sighting of a man watching the children from a car parked nearby

Further anomalies fueled suspicion. The Sodders’ attempts to get help during the fire were thwarted: their phone line was dead, and a neighbor’s attempt to call the fire department failed. George tried to use his trucks to climb to an upstairs window, but both vehicles inexplicably wouldn’t start despite working fine earlier. Days after the fire, the family found a strange object in the yard—a pineapple-shaped device later identified as a napalm bomb, though its connection to the fire was never clarified. Witnesses also reported seeing a man at the scene with a block and tackle, possibly tampering with evidence, and a ladder George kept nearby was missing during the rescue attempt.

The Aftermath

The Sodders believed their children were alive, possibly kidnapped. Over the years, they received tantalizing but inconclusive leads: a photograph mailed to them in 1967 of a young man resembling Louis, sightings of children matching the siblings’ descriptions, and rumors of a cover-up tied to local corruption or even organized crime (George, an Italian immigrant, had been outspoken against Mussolini, earning enemies). The family erected a billboard near the site offering a reward and kept the case alive.

Investigations uncovered more questions than answers. A 1949 excavation of the site found a few bone fragments and a heart, but experts determined the bones were not human, and the heart’s origin was dubious, possibly planted. The fire department’s response was delayed until 8 a.m., and the investigation was criticized as shoddy. Some speculated the fire was arson meant to cover an abduction, possibly motivated by personal vendettas or a botched kidnapping gone wrong.or

To this day, no definitive trace of the five Sodder children has been found. Were they taken before the fire, or did they perish in a blaze that left no remains? Was the fire a tragic accident or a deliberate act tied to darker motives? The case remains open, a chilling puzzle that continues to haunt true crime enthusiasts and the Sodder family descendants who still seek closure.
