1. The Villisca Axe Murder House


Number one on our list, The Villisca Axe Murder House holds a grim place in Iowa's history. In 1912, eight people, including six children, were brutally murdered in this house with an axe, and the case remains unsolved to this day. Visitors often report unusual occurrences like strange noises, unexpected cold spots, and even sightings of ghostly figures resembling the victims.

This site has been preserved and is open for ghost tours, allowing thrill-seekers and paranormal enthusiasts to spend the night and witness the paranormal for themselves. In fact, over 90% of visitors that stay overnight report feeling an unsettling presence, making it a hotspot for paranormal investigation. It is a spot to you don't want to miss visiting, or investigating if your a lover of the paranormal. This place is not for the faint of heart.

2. The Old Jail Museum in Mount Pleasant


The Old Jail Museum, built in 1860, was once home to some of Iowa's most notorious criminals. Now, it stands as a museum, but it is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of its former inmates. There are many spirits here, but the "spirit of Patrick" is said to be a tormenter. His activity is characterized by physical actions like throwing things. Guests frequently report hearing disembodied voices, feeling icy drafts, and even the distinct sound of cell doors slamming shut. Many EVP's ( Electronic Voice Phenomenon) have been captured here. Guests sometimes feel like they are being bullied a spirit or spirits. They even hear their names being called. How chilling!


With its spooky ambiance and countless ghost stories, the Old Jail Museum attracts thousands of visitors each year. In a survey, 65% of visitors described their experience as "creepy" or "chilling," highlighting its reputation as a must-visit haunted location in Iowa.

3. The Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery

In Iowa City, the Black Angel statue looms ominously over Oakland Cemetery. This winged figure is said to carry a curse: anyone who touches the statue may suffer bad luck or even face death. Many visitors report chilling experiences near the statue, including sudden drops in temperature and eerie feelings of being watched.


The Black Angel has become a cultural icon, drawing ghost hunters and curious tourists alike. A study conducted by a local paranormal group found that over 50% of visitors reported experiencing unusual sensations while near the statue, making it a center for ghostly tales and local legend.




4. Farrar Elementary

The Farrar Elementary School, often called the Farrar Schoolhouse, was built in 1922 on farmland in the tiny community of Farrar, Iowa. For decades it served local children, its classrooms buzzing with activity until the district consolidated in 2002 and the doors offically closed.


The building stood empty for a short time until Jim and Nancy Oliver purchased it in 2006. They planned on restoring it and making it their home. At first it seemed like a unique chance to preserve a peice of local history, but soon they realized the scbool held secrets it wasn't ready to give up.


The Olivers begain to notice odd occurences almost immediatly. They would hear footsteps echoing in the hallways, doors slamming shut, lights flickering, shadow apparitions, and disembodied voices. This place is the creme de la creme of haunted locations. They quickly realized they wouldn't be moving in, but instead they decided to open it up to paranormal investigations.


Visitors report strange experiences within every part of the school. Some claim to hear childrens voices echoing throughout the halls, running, and walking when nobody else is there. Doors slam shut on their own, and there are audio recordings of whispered voices. Certain parts of the school are especially notorius for activity. The old principals office on the top floor is sai to be home to a tall, dark shadow figure that unnerves even the seasoned investigators. The boiler room is another hotspot.

5. The Iowa State Penitentiary


The Iowa State Penitentiary, operating since 1839 in Fort Madison, is one of the oldest prisons in the nation. It operated before Iowa was even a state! Modeled after the "Auburn system," the prison was designed for harsh discipline and solitude. The isolation, along with extreme punishments, reportedly drove many of the inmates to insanity, and sadly, suicide.


Before the death penalty was abolished in Iowa, the prison was the site of numerous executions, up to 40 or more! No wonde this place is one of the most haunted locations around. It has housed some of the most dangerous criminals throughout its dark history, marked by executions and riots.


With such a long brutal past, people believe this prison is imbued with residual energy from the suffering of those who lived and died here. Apparitions, disimbodied voices, and unexplained footsteps are commonly reported.

The wardens wife is one of the most famous alleged ghosts to haunt this place. Her name is Helen Glattke, the wife of Warden Arthur L. Glattke. It's rumored that she is seen as an appartition haunting parts of the facility.

The Solitary confinement "Hole" is where visitors have reported unsettling encounters in this area, including cell doors opening and shutting, voices, apparitions and EVP's.

The Execution chamber is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, so if you ever visit this prison, then be sure to head over to this area, but only if you dare.


Guided tours are offered, allowing the bold to explore its reportedly haunted halls and learn about some of the chilling stories that have shaped its history. A staggering 80% of tour participants report feeling a strong, eerie presence while exploring, underscoring its place on this list of haunted sites.
